M2 PRESSWIRE-1 December 2009-Arbor Networks: Arbor Networks Introduces 40 Gig Threat Management System for Surgical Mitigation of Application-Layer Attacks; Peakflow SP 5.1 Also Enhances DNS Service Protection and IPv6 Visibility and Security(C)1994-2009 M2 COMMUNICATIONS

RDATE:01122009

Arbor Networks, a leading provider of secure service control solutions for global business networks, today announced the availability of version 5.1 of Arbor Peakflow SP, the industry's leading network-wide infrastructure security and traffic-monitoring platform.

In this release, Arbor is introducing a 40Gig version of its integrated Threat Management System (TMS) which identifies and surgically removes network and application-layer attacks without interrupting the flow of legitimate traffic. Additionally, Peakflow SP 5.1 includes new capabilities to secure DNS servers and infrastructure which are under a significant number of targeted application-layer attacks. Peakflow SP 5.1 also becomes the first product to offer IPv6 visibility and security - which will help Arbor's customers with the transition to the IPv6 protocol.

"There are a couple of industry firsts in this release, including 40Gig mitigation of distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) and application-layer attack traffic, as well as visibility and security into IPv6 traffic, which will become increasingly important to our service provider customers as they transition to IPv6 in the months and years ahead," said Rob Malan, Arbor Networks co-founder and chief technology officer. "Arbor Networks is focused on delivering solutions that meet our customers' needs today, tomorrow and well into the future."

The DDoS Threat to the Internet Data Centre

Over the years, the role, size and complexity of the Internet Data Centre(IDC) has changed dramatically. For enterprises, what was once an internal server farm running a limited set of applications is now a complex infrastructure of Internet-facing network equipment, a myriad of security products, and an array of servers running a multitude of IP-based applications. For service providers, the IDC has become a new profit centre as it delivers in-cloud services such as email, backup, Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP), multimedia and Web hosting. For large content or e-commerce providers, the Internet-facing IDC is the heart of their business. Without it, they do not exist as a company. Although such technologies and trends promise to deliver cost savings, they also create new challenges associated with security, availability and performance. A DDoS attack directed at one consumer of data centre or cloud services has the potential to disrupt services for other organisations making use of the same multitenant cloud infrastructure.

"The cloud model can only succeed if businesses are convinced that their data is secure and their services will be available," said Michael Suby, Director of Stratecast (a Division of Frost & Sullivan). "The unique capabilities of the Peakflow platform combine network-wide visibility, application insight and security, enabling service providers and data centre operators to maintain service availability even during sophisticated application-layer attacks. This type of layered approach to infrastructure security is exactly what is required given today's increasingly complex threat landscape. Without the ability to mitigate only the attack traffic, network operators are forced to complete the attack for the attackers, shutting down services for not just the intended victim, but others using the same cloud-based infrastructure."

Service Protection

In addition to application-layer attack detection and mitigation, the Threat Management System delivers deep visibility into critical IP services and applications running on the network, such as DNS, HTTP, VoIP, IM, P2P and now, for the first time in the industry, IPv6 traffic. This powerful combination of visibility and security allows network operators to maintain availability, reduce support costs and optimise current or future business services.

Platform for Managed Services

Peakflow SP is a strategic investment that enables service providers to leverage the same solution used for infrastructure visibility and security to deliver new, differentiated, revenue-generating managed services, such as MPLS VPN visibility and DDoS protection. More than forty of the world's leading service providersare utilising the Peakflow SP platform todeploy network-based offerings in an easy and scalable way to protect their enterprise customers' networks from DDoS and other cyber attacks that disrupt corporate networks and business continuity.
