SA: Rann says he'll legislate to ban transport of nuclear waste

South Australian Premier MIKE RANN says his government will legislate to ban the transportationof nuclear waste in the state when parliament resumes next week.

The legislation will put the state government on a collision course with the federalgovernment, which has earmarked a site near Woomera for a radioactive waste dump.

Mr RANN says he's more determined than ever to pass the legislation after revelationsyesterday that 170 trucks full of nuclear waste will be driven to Woomera next year ifthe dump goes ahead.

But federal Science Minister PETER MCGAURAN says South Australian Environment MinisterJOHN HILL has publicly admitted radioactive waste is being stored in an unsafe way inthe state.

Mr MCGAURAN says the repository at Woomera is the safest place for the waste.
