WASHINGTON -- J. Dennis Hastert's skills as a behind-the-scenes coalition builder and good listener may not be the stuff of revolutions and flashy headlines.
But the mild-mannered Illinois Republican's pragmatism is just what demoralized House Republicans need in a speaker after the high-profile resignations of two others in recent weeks, GOP election losses and a bruising impeachment battle, according to colleagues.
``They do call me `the Coach' on the Hill, and I guess one of my roles is to put other people out there in the limelight, to get to be the star, and I think that's what we'll be able to do in this Congress,'' Hastert said at Chicago's O'Hare International Airport on his way home from Washington on Sunday night.
